Natural Care for Children

Caring for young children can be a scary proposition, especially the first one. Every squeak, blow, bubble, etc... may give moms a fright. Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology is essential. If you have school age children, start teaching them now! When illness occurs today, most look for a prescription to cure the ailment. That prescription may cure the ailment, but it is not food, so does not nourish the body and give it the ammunition it needs to be well and stay well. Baseline nutrition is critical for this. So where do you start? You start with water. The composition of the human body is mostly water. Therefore water and proper hydration is essential. Drinking filtered water is recommended due to the high level contamination found in tap water.

Breast milk is great nourishment for an ill child who is nursing. However, if you are not nursing your child, water, broth, or gruel is recommended to prevent dehydration. Due to the sugar in juice, it is good to dilute it with water to keep the sugar levels down. Lemon and water is good to aid with eliminating mucous, in recovering from flu, virus, or stomach aches. Making vegetable broth of chicken soup is good. Cut up lots of fresh onion and garlic. Peppermint Oil is also a good remedy for colds, sore throats, stomach aches, etc... It can be used both topically and orally. Peppermint tea, or candy is a staple in most homes, but the oil is more potent. Colloidal Silver is a natural antibiotic. It is a liquid that can be taken

orally and used topically as well. be sure to consult your healthcare practitioner for proper use. Colloidal Silver was used before the advent of pharmaceuticals. If you never feed you child sugar laden or processed, fast or convenience foods, they will not want what they have never had. Build healthy eating habits from birth by starting with breast milk, the perfect baby food. -ewc

Human Growth Hormone

Human Growth Hormone or HGH is abundantly available in youth but steadily declines in adulthood as we age. HGH is produced in the pituitary gland in the brain. It is essential to growth in children. It's secretion is stimulated by sleep and exercise. HGH increases calcium retention, strengthens and increases mineralization of bones, increases muscle mass, induces protein synthesis, and growth of many different organ systems of the body. It should be noted that short children given HGH show no difference in self-esteem. Some think that HGH is a fountain of youth but beware. JAMA, Nov. 13, 2002; 288:2282-2292 reported that the benefits of the elderly taking HGH was limited and may pose serious health risks. To quote Dr. Mercola "I strongly believe it is unwise to force-feed the body hormones unless you have a very good reason to do so. It makes far more sense to supply the body with natural foods free of pesticides, with a strong focus on whole raw foods that haven't been destroyed by cooking." -ewc

Exercise Boons: Children's Needs

Today's children are not as fit as yesterday's child. Why? T.V., computers of all sorts, no proper place to play, community break down, pollution, inactive parents, illness, poor diet, etc... When I was little, we never came in the house unless we had to. It was understood that you would go out and play. Ride bike, jump rope, double dutch, run, play tag, have team games, such as kick ball, soft ball, basketball, T-ball, swing, see-saw, teeter totter, skate board, scooter, roller skate, etc... There was spontaneity and a looking forward to what the next play day would bring. Electronic gadgets have a lot to answer for in terms of the sedentary occupation of time

that it consumes for children and adults alike. Team sports are great, but they aren't for everyone. Not everyone can afford the finances or time that requires and some kids just aren't interested.

Spontaneous, daily play outside of the home or neighborhood kids seems to be a thing of the past or extremely limited. Families live far apart, so that the cousin network, older looking after younger, is not readily available. Free play time is where social interaction and development take place. This is the time that children discover likes and dislikes, gifts of ability and focus to gain skills that they want to acquire as

they grow. Children learn to make choices, learn parameters of their capabilities as well as safety limits. Free play is where children's creativity can soar. Each child is unique, and in times past it was understood that all children needed to develop a love or habit of regular physical activity to keep them healthy throughout life. With free play came the intermixing of children of various age levels, the older able to supervise and teach the young and the young helping the older children to mature and segue into adulthood, keeping them young at heart by playing with the youngsters and developing physical skills by playing games/sports with their peers. Drill team, cheer leader, ping pong, pool, swimming, bowling, fishing, golf, and more. -ewc

Food for Thought: Carrots

Carrots are so distinctive looking as a food that everyone recognizes it at a glance, whether sliced, diced, grated, or as steamed carrots! It shows up at almost every table set with healthy varieties of food. Why? How many other orange vegetables can you name? One? Two? Carrots provide certain nutrients in a dose that most other vegetables don't...that is beta carotene and vitamin A. It has the added benefit of dietary fiber, antioxidants (use these for kids) and minerals. Carrots are a root vegetable that is orange or white in color and may have a woody texture.

The tops are edible though rarely eaten. This is the part that rabbits are more likely to eat in the garden than the root or "taproot". Carrots store well (root cellar fodder) and are used to liven up stews, salads and many other healthy food dishes. In the winter, carrots are the nose of choice for snowmen. Children are told to "eat your carrots if you want to have good eyesight", because of their Vitamin A content. The wild ancestors of carrots are thought to have originated in Afghanistan. Queen Anne's Lace is also said to be relative of the garden

carrot. Carrots became popular in the Netherlands in the 15th and 16th Century because of the Royal House of Orange. -ewc

Think Beta Carotene and Vitamin A when you think of carrots.

Kitchen Herbs Basil

Basil is an herb that you can grow in a pot or in your backyard during the growing season. You can pick the leaves and use them fresh or you can pick them and dry or dehydrate them for use at a later time. You won't have to purchase them at the store. You can also grow other herbs to use fresh, dry or dehydrated to create blends, such as Italian Seasoning etc. Sweet basil is the variety most used in cooking. It is a fragrant herb used for it's spicy, slightly peppery flavor with a touch of mint and clove. Just bruising a leaf basil releases it's spicy fragrance. Basil can be used as a hanging plant, a border plant in a flower

garden, in containers and raised beds. In cooking it is traditionally used in Mediterranean, Italian, and Thai dishes. It blends well with garlic, thyme, and lemon. It is so versatile it can be used raw or cooked. Gourmands, try to preserve the fresh lear in a frozen ice cube! Basil is a member of the mint family and is known to aid indigestion. Try an after dinner cup of basil tea for a change. -ewc

Couples Communication: In Sickness and in Health

When a relationship develops it starts with the liking of one another because of looks of actions. As you get to know each other and begin to have respect, that respect then leads to trust. That trust leads to commitment, which leads to long term relationships. Positive communication is so vital to maintaining that relationship. Hence taking care of yourself or as it is termed today "self-care" is extremely important because it says, I love you and I want us to have a quality life together. Unfortunately life is not like the fairy tales and the unexpected may happen, sudden illness, accidents, etc...and the relationship has to adjust based on those occurrences. However, if you take the necessary positive steps that you can today, and are careful with your health, you will limit such occurrences. It is also important that after taking responsibility for you own health, that you look out for the health of your mate and encourage healthy habits. With a winning buddy system like

that, you can't go wrong. That doesn't mean you can't be flexible, but it does mean that you can have a long and quality life together. The key is to set the example and encourage (not nag) your mate to do the same. Communication is more than just words. You have heard the sayings, "action speaks louder than words" or "look at what a person does, not what he says." However, if your mate becomes ill, then be supportive and encouraging, remember positive attitude is key to getting well. Make sure you keep your immune system strong, by eating at least 5 to 7 vegetables and 2 to 4 fruits daily and drink plenty of water.

Your Body's Beat: Prevent Constipation in Children

If you want your child to have a healthy digestive system, then breast feeding is essential. Mother's milk gives infants all the correct nourishment needed in the right proportions and content necessary for proper development. It is unfortunate that society has gotten away from natural process and that there is such a controversy over breast feeding. Formula is the start of many digestive concerns. Once a child begins to eat it should be healthy organic foods, rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber.

Constipating and mucous building foods should be avoided. However, that is what many children are fed: cheese, cow's milk, French fries, or other fast or convenience foods. So many moms say that their children are difficult eaters and they give them what they want. Cheddar fish crackers, rice cakes, dry cereal, chips of some sort, bulk fillers with no nutritional value.
If you never start feeding your children sugar laden products they won't develop the taste for them.

Tell family and friends to give your children fresh fruits and steamed veggies for snacks, wholesome soups with whole grains in them, such as millet. Also make sure juice and soda don't replace water. Fruit is best eaten in it's natural state and soda is highly acidic, destructive to bones, teeth, and the digestive system. Eating well is all the prevention that you will need to prevent elimination problems. -ewc

Soda, an acid, is destructive
to the digestive system!

Essential Oils: Soothing Bath for Children

Water is so refreshing to the body, which is also comprised mostly of water. Children often like to imitate their parents and if you use essential oils in your bath, they will too. Here's a good blend of essential oils: in a base of 2 to 3 teaspoons of carrier oil are 2 drops of lavender and 2 drops of mandarin. Run a full tub of water (this is for children over 6) put the oil blend in the water. The kids can help too. To mix the oil in the water move the water in a figure eight motion the whole length of the tub. The water should be room temperature to warm. Twenty minutes

is a good length of time to play and soak before drying down and putting on pajamas in preparation for bed. Substitute this blend for those suffering from congestion with: 2 drops of peppermint or eucalyptus and 2 drops of chamomile in the 2 to 3 teaspoons of oil base. This could become habit forming. -ewc

Parenting in the Neighborhood: Managing the Family Diet

What you feed your family is important! With malnutrition running rampant in this land of plenty it is important that the family dietitian (usually mom) understand a few important facts. What is malnutrition? It is because the proper nutrients are not in the foods that you eat. It used to mean

that you didn't have enough to eat, but today it means that the foods you eat are dead foods, especially refined, prepackaged, sugar or salt loaded, preserved foods or produce picked before it is ripe. Yes, you can eat plenty of dead foods and not be hungry and really enjoy them, but the price is malnutrition that leads to malfunctioning body systems. The fast food diet is quick to jam your digestive system up. The symptom that most people experience is constipation. If you don't have regular bowel movements after you eat (3 times/day), then that is a sign of constipation. Food should not be eaten for taste, it's purpose is for sustenance. It is important to eat nutritionally balanced meals. If you have ever been to a nursing home you find that out real quick. IV's hooked up for hydration and feeding tubes for nourishment. It's not something we like to think about, but we should. Prevention is the key to good health and leading a quality life. Most illnesses start right in the digestive system. What can you do? The fruits and vegetables you eat should vary day to

day and have a rainbow color variety, as color indicates nutritional content. How many a day? Five to seven vegetables and two to four fruits daily are recommended. Believe me you will have no problems with elimination if you do this. Today it is necessary to make sure your fruits and vegetables are washed with a pesticide rinse. You can use Sunshine Concentrate to clean your produce or organically grown produce is recommended. Drinking pure water is also essential. Half your body weight in ounces of water is necessary for the daily flushing of toxins from your body! Also eating nutrient rich foods will decrease the amount of food you eat, not only in calories but in quantity, because hunger is a cry from the body for the necessary nutrients to function properly. -ewc
