Toxins In the Home

We are taught from youth that cleanliness is next to godliness but somehow in the hustle and bustle of today's fast pace of life, that axiom may get lost. Hence the proliferation of cleaning companies, from Handy Husbands to the Maid Brigade. It is important for homes to be cleaned on a regular basis. Carpets hold dirt, dust and microscopic allergens and even harmful chemicals from the production of synthetic fibers or chemical to coat the fibers to make them dirt resistant. What has increased the problem is our homes becoming more energy efficient trapping fresh air out such that the air in our homes is more polluted than the air outside. Also, as we move from natural to synthesized we are seeing an ever increasing number of medical conditions that

have never existed before afflict the masses. Some of the synthesized cleaning solutions are toxic to humans causing allergic reactions and disease. The oils used in cleaning solutions such as pine and lemon used to be real oils. Now synthesized oils with none of the redeeming properties are sold for the real thing. Is there a difference? Yes! The effects of the real, which were naturally cleaning, germ killing and nontoxic are different from the synthesized which may clean, but kill no germs and are toxic to our systems. The catch is we cant see the difference, but we can feel them. Many of today's serious illnesses are brought on by the solutions that we use in our homes.

Those most affected are children and the elderly. There is a growing industry for natural cleaning companies and products. Home Wellness is a term that is gaining popularity as people develop illnesses that are difficult to diagnose, and sometimes get traced back to something in the home! Recent research indicates that most people experience some type of reaction to allergens in the home, so be careful .

Exercise Boons: Working Out at Home

Many women are choosing to be athome-moms or work-at-home-moms. That may make finding time to take care of  yourself or having alone time - very difficult especially with infants and toddlers under foot. One of the biggest complaints of these moms is fatigue, too much to do and not enough time to take care of herself. What are some solutions that will aid mom? Time management is important and requires the aid of all in the family and the will to stick to a plan for at least 17 days. The most important exercise is getting enough rest, so as not to suffer from sleep deprivation. The next exercise is

to eat regular healthy meals and not do quick processed meals that offer no nutrition. Supplementing with a multi vitamin like Super Supplemental Vitamins and Minerals would help ensure that daily nutritional needs are met. The third exercise is to plan exercise into the daily routine of household duties. It is hard to break through the cycle of fatigue from lack

of proper rest, nutrition and stress that creates the lack of will to do the simplest of thing and may even cause depression. Exercise may relieve these symptoms. That might mean going up and down the stairs 10 times while carrying loads of laundry or taking

the kids for a walk in the stroller for 30 minutes around the block or if you have older children, jumping rope with them. A rebounder (mini trampoline) is also effective if put to use. Gradually build up to jumping 20 to 30 minutes three times a week. Some moms will buy workout videos and use them with good results. The key is the mental discipline to follow through and stick with it. If you are lucky, you will be able to have someone watch the kids three times a week while you attend a place like Curves or Bally's or Gold's Gym so you can get a serious workout. However, figuring out what will work for you and doing it will give you the confidence and energy to change your lifestyle and feel like a new woman. You deserve to feel well. –ewc

Food for Thought: Potent Garlic by Yael Cooper

Garlic is a favorite herb that is used in many dishes. Its strength however, is in eating it raw! Garlic has a powerful tangy taste, and has powerful antibiotic properties. Garlic (Allium Sativum) is closely related the onion, shallot, and leek family. Garlic has been used for millions of years for culinary and medicinal purposes. The part of garlic that is most often consumed is the bulb or head, which is comprised of small cloves. The stems or leaves can also be consumed when they are still

'young' and tender. Garlic can be used to treat ear infections, help prevent heart disease, and cancer. It has even been used to treat tuberculosis.

Garlic has also been used for superstitious reasons as well for instance make a necklace of garlic and it is believed to keep vampires and bad spirits away. Garlic is a natural blood thinner and is

The Grainy Truth About Corn (part 1)

Corn or Maize, as it is called by the Native Americans, has been a staple of the Americas for more than a thousand years. It is called the "Gift of the Gods" by Native American Tribes, many of whom have celebrations around the harvest of maize. The Pueblo Indians of New Mexico still do the sacred Corn Dance every year. Columbus took the seed back to Europe, but it did not become popular there as a human crop and is used mostly for animal feed.

Today there are several types of corn available to the consumer: Sweet corn, Field corn, Indian or Flint corn Blue corn and Popcorn. We use it dried, as corn meal, as Hominy, as grits, flour or cornstarch. We eat sweet corn on the cob, use corn meal to make corn bread or hush puppies, grits for breakfast, corn flour to make tortillas, popcorn with butter sold at the movie theaters as a standard and cornstarch as a thickener. It is also used as feed for cattle. Corn is one of the largest money crops in the Americas. -ewc

Couples Communication: Handling Disappointment

There is often nothing more heart wrenching than major disappointment. How do you handle having to give your mate disappointing news? This can really affect a relationship, as disappointments are often rehearsed for years afterwards. Isn't it something that our minds will focus on that more than the joys that may greatly out number the disappointments? As a couple, it would do you well to have preventative strategies in place. What can you do to counter not being able to keep a date, or having to cancel a romantic weekend getaway or having to work long hours for a prolonged period of time, thereby limiting the time you have to grow together? It seems the longer you are together the more you can get into some ruts that need attention. Spending your free time apart may be one of them.

Maybe you should clean up your act, and counter plan a positive occurrence for every disappointment that occurs. Don't just brush it off! That way you will have an excellent come back if the disappointment is ever brought up in the future! Nurturing your relationship by minimizing the negatives is important for achieving a positive quality relationship. Being able to smile whenever you see your other half and mean it is a gift that has to be nurtured. Familiarity breeds contempt is a maxim we learn from youth. In order for a relationship to thrive, you must make that maxim a false one so that familiarity breeds a deeper bond of love and care that can't be broken, one that handles minor disappointments with ease. –ewc

Your Body's Beat: Lungs

Aveoli. Do you know what that is? If you have asthma, emphysema or some other form of respiratory distress you probably do! That's right, aveoli are specialized lung tissue (sacs) that allow for the exchange of gasses between the air and blood. These air sacs are sensitive to smoke and mucous because both cause them to clog up and cease to function as they should. It is important to maintain good air quality in your home. Using chemicals for cleaning, cigarette smoke, gas from stove or

heaters etc. pollute the air in your home. Increasing your lung capacity by using deep breathing increases the amount of oxygen you take in your body. Most people are shallow breathers. Practice breathing from you diaphragm. To help keep your home air clean you can purchase the natural cleaners which are plant based and organic; purchase a vacuum cleaner with a hepa filter which won't put most of the dust back in the air. Air filtration systems are also becoming more

popular due to the increase in respiratory distress especially in the young and elderly. Be sure to purchase one like the Guardian Air which is so efficient that it is classified as a type II medical device. Your good health is important to the quality of life that you lead and to longevity. Prevention is the key, not intervention. –ewc

Air sacs in the lungs that become filled with mucous which hardens can no longer absorb oxygen!

Essential Oils: Pine Needle (Pinus sylvestris)

Pine has been used as a cleaning disinfectant for a very long time. In olden days pine was brought indoors to deodorize and freshen indoor air. Pine boughs were broken off the trees and woven up stair cases placed over fire places, etc. Smelling the pine uplifts, energizes. It is known for its antiseptic and expectorant qualities. As an antiseptic it has been added to cleaning solutions or disinfectants for years and years.

The antiseptic smell of pine in homes has been synonymous with a clean home. Pine is also known to aid with all types of respiratory problems such as colds, bronchial congestion, lung infections, pneumonia, and emphysema. Smokers may like to use this to counter the effects of heavy smoking plus having an effect of promoting tissue oxygenation. To securely purchase some online, click here. -ewc

Parenting in the Neighborhood: Keeping A Clean Home!

Everyone has their own standards of what is acceptable in terms of dirt levels. Some people keep a spotless house, while others have a more relaxed standard. However, all agree that there is a level of cleanliness that should be maintained. As children enter the picture that becomes more of a challenge and I am talking cleaning vs. clutter. That's another article. Parents are the ones to set the standard and parents are the ones who have to enforce those standards or else the parents become the children's maid! For those who can afford it, hire one! What products are utilized are important as well. Why? Because so many people suffer from allergies or develop unexplainable illnesses, that are traced back to synthetics in the home. Synthetic chemicals used in cleaning solutions are often to blame. Many are turning to making their own or buying only organic ecology friendly products. Here's an introduction to using or making your own using organic products, such as essential oils, pine, lemon, peppermint or organic based concentrates like Sunshine Concentrate Cleaner which can be purchased in a kit called Home Solutions Kit (aka Health Home & Beauty Kit) or organic plug-in air fresheners called Aromaball Plug-in diffusers

which allow you to use the aroma essential oil of your choice. Allergens such as bacteria, mold and animal dander can also create strong odors that are hard to remove. Neutralize protein allergens on contact and eliminate the source of odor with the Home Solutions Allergen Relief with Odor Neutralizer by Aerus. It is a nontoxic, plant based formula and 100% biodegradable. It is estimated that at least 80% of the homes in the US have large dust mite infestations. Recent research by the National Academy of Sciences shows that the presence of dust mites can actually cause asthma, especially in children. Mattresses, carpet, and upholstery are ideal breeding grounds for dust mites and fleas, living off the dried skin and pet dander that accumulates. Protect your home and your family by controlling the dust mite and flea population with Home Solutions Dust Mite Control. Home Solutions Dust Mite Control is a specially formulated borate compound that provides long lasting control over dust mites and fleas. It mixes easily in water providing an easy and safe treatment that can last up to 6 months. For more information or to purchase products go to www.elizahints.com. –ewc
