The Role of Oxygen

A proper supply of oxygen gives you energy!


Anoxia is the absence of oxygen. Do you get enough oxygen to function as you should? Oxygen is one of the gases that the blood stream carries throughout the body to cells.

Breathing in fresh supplies of oxygen is vital for survival. We breathe in air containing oxygen through the nose or mouth. The Oxygen travels down the bronchial tubes entering our lungs. The lungs have alveoli or air sacs where oxygen goes into our blood stream going through out the body to the cells.

Once the oxygen enters a cell a chemical reaction takes place with the glucose in that cell producing Carbon dioxide, water and energy. This is respiration. The Carbon dioxide is toxic to our body so it exits the body on a reverse path of oxygen. Hence, we breathe in Oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. Obtaining fresh supplies of Oxygen is critical, hence how we breathe is vital to our air intake.

To optimize breathing and gain maximum lung capacity use diaphragmatic breathing. Most people take shallow breaths or chest breathe. The diaphragm is one of the largest muscles in the body. Using it properly will increase our energy levels and controlled breathing relaxes the body and clears the mind. It takes 17 days to change from shallow breathing to diaphragmatic breathing! So start practicing today, so it becomes your habit within a month.

Our air supply is important to survival. It is important to be aware of the air you breathe. Oxygen levels in the atmosphere have diminished over the past 100 years. So it is important that we breathe in air that is as clean as possible. We should be conscious of our contributions to the polluting of the earth and support efforts to minimize pollution and to clean up the air we breathe. For example, walk when you can, ride a bike, and car pool.
